What Are Flat Feet?

Flat feet, or fallen arches, occur when the arch of the foot is low or absent, causing the entire sole to come into full or near-full contact with the ground when standing. While often harmless, flat feet can sometimes lead to pain, discomfort, or other issues in the feet, ankles, or knees.

Who Is at Risk of Flat Feet?

Flat feet can occur at any age and may develop due to various factors:

Genetics: Some are born with flat feet or develop them if the arches don’t fully form during childhood.

Injury: Damage to foot tendons or joints can result in fallen arches.

Age: Aging can weaken arches, especially if the posterior tibial tendon becomes strained.

Obesity: Excess weight strains the arches, increasing the risk.

Health Conditions: Conditions like arthritis or diabetes may weaken the muscles and structures supporting the arch.

Symptoms of Flat Feet

Not everyone with flat feet experiences symptoms, but common signs include:

Pain or discomfort in the arch or heel.

Feet that tire easily during standing or walking.

Swelling or stiffness in the feet or ankles.

Poor alignment leading to knee, hip, or lower back pain.

How to Manage and Support Flat Feet

Proper Footwear: Choose shoes with good arch support and cushioning; avoid unsupportive footwear like flip-flops.

Orthotics: Use custom or over-the-counter inserts to support the arch, reduce discomfort, and improve alignment.

Stretching and Strengthening:

Stretch tight calf and Achilles muscles to relieve foot strain.

Strengthen foot and ankle muscles, particularly the posterior tibial tendon, to improve arch support.

Activity Modification: Alternate standing or walking with low-impact activities like swimming or cycling.

Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy weight reduces strain on the feet and prevents further discomfort.

When to Seek Help

If flat feet cause significant pain or interfere with daily activities, consult a healthcare professional. A physiotherapist or podiatrist can provide personalized exercises, orthotics, or other treatments.

Conclusion

Flat feet are common and often not a cause for concern. With the right care, footwear, and exercises, you can manage symptoms and enhance your quality of life.

As a physiotherapist, I often see patients struggling with heel pain caused by a condition known as plantar fasciitis. This condition affects the thick band of tissue at the bottom of your foot called the plantar fascia, which connects your heel bone to your toes and supports your foot’s arch. When this tissue becomes irritated or inflamed due to excessive strain, it leads to the sharp pain associated with plantar fasciitis. Who is at Risk? Plantar fasciitis doesn’t discriminate—it can affect a variety of people, but certain factors increase the risk: Runners and athletes: High-impact sports like running can place excessive strain on the plantar fascia. People on their feet all day: If you have a job that requires long hours of standing or walking (e.g., teachers, factory workers), you may be more prone to this condition. Those with foot mechanics issues: Having flat feet, high arches, or improper walking patterns can put stress on the plantar fascia. Overweight individuals: Carrying extra weight puts additional pressure on your feet, increasing the strain on the plantar fascia. Aging: The risk increases with age, especially between the ages of 40 and 60. What Does Plantar Fasciitis Feel Like? The classic symptom is heel pain, often described as sharp or stabbing. You might notice thepain is: Most intense when taking your first steps in the morning. Worsened after long periods of standing or after sitting for a while. More noticeable after exercise rather than during it. How Can Physiotherapy Help with Plantar Fasciitis? The good news is that physiotherapy can be highly effective in managing and resolving plantar fasciitis. Here are some key strategies we use: 1.Stretching and Strengthening: I’ll guide you through stretches to improve the flexibility of the Achilles tendon, calf muscles, and plantar fascia, which helps relieve tension. Strengthening the muscles in your feet and legs can also provide better support for the […]

Tradies’ Health Challenges

Recent surveys of tradies across the country have highlighted some concerning trends:

Over 90% of tradies experienced work-related injuries or pain in the past year, with these injuries often caused or worsened by work activities.

76% reported that pain significantly impacts their quality of life.

42% described their pain as severe, with some suffering for months or even years.

87% use medication or self-medicate to manage pain, with 30% turning to drugs or alcohol.

24% worry they may need to retire early due to the physical stress of their job.

Nearly two-thirds of those who have seen a physiotherapist reported significant pain reduction or elimination.

Why Tradies Need Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy can be a game-changer for tradies, especially for persistent issues like back, knee, and shoulder pain. Here’s how physiotherapy can make a difference:

Prevent Injuries: Physiotherapists teach proper techniques to work safely and avoid common injuries.

Early Intervention: Addressing pain early helps prevent chronic issues and long-term complications.

Enhance Quality of Life: Effective pain management enables you to stay productive and enjoy your daily activities.

Adapt with Age: Physiotherapy helps adjust work habits as your body ages, reducing injury risk and extending your career.

What Are Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs)?

MSDs involve injuries or diseases of the musculoskeletal system, which includes muscles, bones, joints, and connective tissues. Common MSDs include:

Sprains and Strains: Injuries to muscles, ligaments, and tendons.

Back Injuries: Problems like herniated discs or muscle strains.

Joint and Bone Injuries: Damage or degeneration of joints and bones.

Nerve Injuries: Conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

Soft Tissue Injuries: Such as hernias.

Chronic and Acute Pain: Pain lasting longer or shorter than three months, respectively.

How Do MSDs Happen?

MSDs can develop gradually through repetitive movements or static positions, or suddenly due to strenuous activity or unexpected movements.

Managing Hazardous Manual Tasks

Hazardous manual tasks can increase MSD risk and include:

Repetitive Movement: Frequent, repetitive actions.

Repetitive or Sustained Force: Applying force repeatedly or for extended periods.

High or Sudden Force: Engaging in activities requiring significant force.

Sustained or Awkward Postures: Maintaining uncomfortable body positions.

Exposure to Vibration: Using tools that produce vibrations.

Preventing MSDs: Key Strategies

Identify Hazardous Tasks: Recognize tasks that may put you at risk.

Eliminate or Minimize Risks: Redesign tasks to avoid hazards or implement control measures if elimination isn’t possible.

Control Measures for Hazardous Manual Tasks

If risks can’t be eliminated, consider these measures:

Redesign Work Areas: Arrange workspaces to minimize awkward postures and manual handling.

Adjust Workspace Heights: Ensure work surfaces are at an appropriate height.

Use Mechanical Aids: Employ tools to assist with lifting and carrying.

Rotate Tasks: Share manual handling tasks among workers to reduce strain.

Training: Educate workers on proper manual handling techniques.

Dry needling is a modern treatment that involves skilled practitioners inserting acupuncture needles into specific areas of muscles tightness known as trigger points. Trigger points are often the culprit behind the pain you’re experiencing, and once they’re treated, you can gain benefits such as:

Improved mobility and flexibility

Increased tissue healing and recovery

Reduced pain

Reduced inflammation

Common Misconceptions about Dry needling:

“Dry needling is the same as acupuncture”.

Although both treatment styles use the same needle, the technique and placement is different. Acupuncture is based on the body’s meridian channels and restoring energy balance, whereas dry needling is targeted at specific trigger points. Therefore, your acupuncture experience (whether helpful or not) will not necessarily be the same as your experience with dry needling.

“ Dry needling has many side effects”.

Side effects are typically mild and brief. Like with most hands-on treatment, you may experience muscle soreness for 1-2 days as a sign that your body is adjusting to the treatment.

“Dry needling is only for muscle pain”.

While dry needling is widely recognised for its effectiveness for treating muscle pain and tightness, it is also beneficial for other conditions such as chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and joint problems like knee pain.
